What Is Pink Aesthetics?
In aesthetic dentistry, white aesthetics deals with the teeth and pink aesthetics with the gums. Healthy gum tissue is light pink, firm in texture and wraps the teeth like a symmetrical frame. When that frame shows too much, runs unevenly or darkens in colour, it unbalances the smile even when the teeth themselves are flawless.
Gum aesthetics covers a broad family of procedures: correcting a gummy smile, evening out asymmetry, laser contouring, lightening dark pigmentation and repairing recession with soft-tissue grafts. Which procedure you need is decided by assessing your smile line, lip dynamics and gum biotype together. Getting the diagnosis right matters just as much as the procedure itself.
Gummy Smile and How It Is Corrected
When the gums show more than ideal during a smile, it is called a gummy smile. As a general guide, more than two to three millimetres of visible gum is considered beyond the aesthetic threshold — but the real measure is not statistics, it is your facial proportions and how you feel about your smile.
A gummy smile rarely has a single cause: teeth that remain partly covered by gum tissue, a hyperactive upper lip that lifts too far, or the underlying skeletal pattern can all contribute. Treatment therefore follows the cause; in a large share of cases laser gum recontouring is enough, while some cases add lip repositioning or orthodontic support to the plan. At the consultation we first pinpoint the cause, then recommend the most predictable route for you.
Laser Gum Contouring: Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivectomy is the removal of excess gum tissue; gingivoplasty is reshaping the gum margin to its naturally scalloped form. At DizgeKlinik we perform these procedures mostly with a soft-tissue laser: because the laser seals vessels as it works, bleeding is minimal, sutures are unnecessary in most cases and healing is noticeably more comfortable.
The procedure is completely painless under local anaesthesia and, depending on its scope, usually takes 30–60 minutes. The new gum line is visible the moment we finish; most of our patients notice the difference at their first glance in the mirror. Before any contouring we also assess the bone level, because a lasting result is only achieved when the work respects the bone architecture beneath the gum.
Crown Lengthening and Asymmetric Gum Levels
In some cases the excess is not limited to the gum; the bone just below the margin also covers part of the tooth surface. If only soft tissue is removed in such a case, the gum creeps back to its old level within months. Crown lengthening reshapes a fine line of bone together with the gum, securing a result that does not relapse.
Asymmetric gum levels — one front tooth appearing clearly shorter than its neighbour, for instance — are among the first imbalances the eye catches in a smile. With millimetric planning the levels are evened out; the goal is a symmetrical frame in which the gum margins follow the smile line. Where veneers or crowns are planned, this correction is done before the restoration so the porcelain sits on the right frame.
Dark Gums and Recession: Depigmentation and Grafting
Brownish or purplish gums are usually the result of excess melanin pigment and are not a disease — yet they can be an aesthetic concern. In depigmentation, the pigmented surface layer is gently removed with a laser; as the tissue heals over a few weeks, it settles into a lighter, healthy pink tone. Smoking and genetic predisposition can bring some pigment back over time, and we discuss that possibility openly at the consultation.
When gum recession is part of the picture, the approach reverses: instead of removing excess tissue, missing tissue has to be replaced. The receded area is grafted with connective tissue taken from the palate or with prepared tissue materials; the exposed root surface is covered, sensitivity decreases and the gum line is rebalanced. Because recession is progressive, early treatment always means simpler treatment.
Healing and the Link with Smile Design
Healing after laser-assisted contouring is quick: mild sensitivity may occur for the first few days, and the majority of our patients return to their daily routine the same day. For the first week, lukewarm soft foods, gentle brushing and the care solutions we recommend are all it takes. Graft procedures heal over a few more weeks and are followed closely with review appointments.
Gum aesthetics is rarely planned in isolation; it is usually the first step of smile design. The pink frame is perfected first, and whitening, veneers or crowns are then built on top of it. With digital smile design you can preview your new gum line and teeth on your own photographs before anything is done — so the decision is made on a preview, not on guesswork.

Is gum contouring a painful procedure?
No. It is performed under local anaesthesia and you feel no pain during the procedure. With the laser there is usually no bleeding and no sutures, so post-operative sensitivity stays mild; the first day or two pass comfortably with simple pain relief.
Will the removed gum tissue grow back?
Not when the procedure is planned correctly. Once the gum is contoured in harmony with the underlying bone level, it stays at its new position. Relapse is typically seen when tissue is removed without assessing the bone — which is why we measure the bone distances before every case.
Is the result of gummy smile treatment permanent?
Yes, when the cause is identified correctly. Corrections addressing gum and bone are lasting. Where a hyperactive lip contributes, additional or repeat approaches may be needed to maintain the effect — we clarify this from the start at the planning stage.
How soon can I return to daily life?
After laser contouring, most of our patients go back to work and social life the same day. For the first few days it is enough to avoid very hot, acidic and hard foods. After graft procedures we ask you to protect the area for a few weeks and manage the process together with review visits.
Can dark gum colour be lightened completely?
In most cases a clear, satisfying lightening is achieved; the target is the tissue's own healthy pink tone. Depending on genetics and smoking, some pigment may gradually return over the years — and if needed, the procedure can be comfortably repeated.
Should gum aesthetics come before veneers or crowns?
Yes — the right order is pink first, then white. Restorations are manufactured to the existing gum line, so changing the frame afterwards creates a mismatch. In smile design cases we always plan the gum correction as the first step.
