Gum Treatments
Gum disease is usually painless and progresses quietly; by the time it is noticed, the bone supporting the teeth may already be damaged. Caught early, however, treatment is simple, quick and comfortable. At DizgeKlinik we see gum health as the foundation of every treatment and every smile: from bleeding to recession, we map each case with a detailed periodontal examination and build a personal plan that ranges from deep cleaning to laser-assisted care. At our clinic in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul, our goal is to keep your teeth in place for life.

A Silent Disease: From Gingivitis to Periodontitis
Gum disease starts with bacterial plaque accumulating on the tooth surface. When plaque is not removed regularly, it hardens into tartar and triggers an inflammatory response in the gum known as gingivitis: redness, mild swelling and bleeding while brushing. This stage is fully reversible; with professional cleaning and correct home care, the gums return to health within a few weeks.
Left untreated, the inflammation advances below the gumline and periodontitis begins. Deepening pockets form between tooth and gum, and the bone supporting the tooth quietly starts to resorb. The most insidious aspect is that the process is usually painless; many patients only notice it once teeth begin to loosen. Regular check-ups are therefore the most reliable way to catch the disease early.
Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore
Bleeding while brushing or flossing is one of the earliest warning signs; healthy gums simply do not bleed. Red, shiny, swollen gums, persistent bad breath or a constant unpleasant taste in the mouth are also common messengers of inflammation. These signals are easy to dismiss, yet seeking care early makes treatment both easier and shorter.
In later stages, gum recession makes teeth look longer than they are, sensitivity to hot and cold increases, new gaps may open between teeth and mobility sets in. It is worth remembering that periodontitis is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults; any of these signs may point to a process putting your teeth at risk, entirely independent of decay.
The Link Between Gum Health and General Health
Gum disease is not a problem confined to the mouth. Research suggests that long-standing, uncontrolled gum inflammation may be associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and several other systemic conditions. Inflamed gum tissue can act as a gateway through which bacteria and inflammatory by-products enter the bloodstream.
With diabetes in particular, the relationship runs both ways: poorly controlled blood sugar can worsen gum disease, while untreated periodontitis can make glucose control harder. We therefore approach gum treatment not only as a way of saving teeth but as part of supporting your overall health, coordinating with your physician when needed.
Diagnosis, Deep Cleaning and Curettage
At DizgeKlinik, treatment begins with detailed periodontal charting: pocket depths are measured around every tooth, bleeding points are recorded and bone levels are assessed on digital X-rays. The resulting map defines the stage of the disease and the scope of treatment.
In early stages, professional scaling is often enough. Once pockets deepen, the deep cleaning known as curettage comes into play: tartar beneath the gumline and bacterial deposits clinging to the root surface are removed with specialised instruments, and the root is smoothed so the gum can reattach. The procedure is comfortable under local anaesthesia and is usually completed by treating sections of the mouth in separate visits.
Mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is natural. As healing progresses, less bleeding, fresher breath and firmer gum tissue are the clearest signs the treatment is working; we track this progress with measurements at follow-up visits.
Laser-Assisted Treatment and Gum Aesthetics
In suitable cases we support deep cleaning with a dental laser. The laser targets bacteria inside the pocket and strengthens disinfection, resulting in less bleeding, less swelling and faster tissue healing. Requiring no incisions or sutures, this approach noticeably improves comfort during and after the procedure.
Once gum health has been restored, attention can turn to appearance. Excessive gum display when smiling, uneven gum levels or aesthetic loss caused by recession can be corrected with gum aesthetics, also known as pink aesthetics. We treat this as a dedicated sub-treatment of periodontics and cover the details on its own page.
The Maintenance Programme: Making Results Last
Periodontitis can be halted with treatment, but the susceptibility lasts a lifetime, which is why the real success lies in protecting what has been regained. After active treatment we enrol our patients in a personalised maintenance programme, scheduling professional care and measurement sessions every three to six months depending on severity. At each session, new deposits are removed and pocket depths are compared against previous values.
Home care is at least as decisive as what happens in the clinic. Correct brushing technique, daily use of interdental brushes or floss and staying away from smoking directly influence how long results last. We show you the tools that fit your mouth and review your routine together at every check-up.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we hear most at consultations — answered plainly.
Is it normal for gums to bleed?
No. Healthy gums do not bleed during brushing or flossing. Bleeding is usually the earliest sign of inflammation, and at that stage treatment is very straightforward. Rather than waiting for it to pass, we recommend having it examined.
Is curettage painful?
No. Deep cleaning is performed under local anaesthesia and no pain is felt during the procedure. Mild sensitivity over the following few days is easily managed with the simple measures your dentist recommends.
Does receding gum tissue grow back on its own?
Lost gum tissue does not regenerate by itself, but treatment can stop the recession from progressing. In suitable cases, grafting and gum aesthetic procedures can significantly improve the appearance. The right option becomes clear at the examination.
How many visits does treatment take?
It depends on the stage. Gingivitis is usually resolved with a single professional cleaning; in periodontitis, deep cleaning is typically completed area by area over two to four visits, followed by the maintenance programme.
Could my bad breath be caused by gum disease?
Yes. Bacterial build-up in gum pockets is one of the most common causes of persistent bad breath. When the gums are the source, sprays and mouthwashes only mask it; lasting relief comes from treating the inflammation.
Can gum disease come back?
It can, if care lapses. With regular maintenance visits, good home care and avoiding smoking, the disease can be kept under control for many years. Our maintenance programme exists precisely to manage that risk.
