What Is Smile Design?
Smile design is not a single procedure; it is a planning discipline that brings several aesthetic treatments together under one coordinated plan. We analyse the length-to-width ratio of your teeth, the dental midline, the way your smile line follows your lower lip, the symmetry of your gum levels and how tooth shade relates to your skin tone. The goal is not 'beautiful teeth' in isolation, but a smile that looks right within your face.
This holistic view covers every component that shapes a smile: the form and alignment of the teeth, their colour, the appearance of the gums and the support of the lips. How much change each component needs varies from person to person; for some patients whitening and small refinements are enough, while others are best served by a full transformation with laminate veneers or zirconium crowns.
Facial Analysis and Digital Design
Facial analysis sits at the heart of Digital Smile Design. We take photographs from several angles and short video clips of you speaking and laughing; from these we assess how your lips move, how much tooth shows when you smile and where the reference lines of your face run. A digital intraoral scan adds a three-dimensional model of your teeth to the same analysis.
Your new smile is then built on this data: tooth shapes are chosen to suit your face, proportions are balanced, and the design is presented to you superimposed on your own photographs. Any detail you are not happy with is updated on screen — before anything at all is done to your teeth.
The Mock-up: Trying the Result in Your Mouth
However good a design looks on screen, the real decision is made in the mouth. A mock-up is the approved digital design applied over your teeth in a temporary material, with no drilling and no preparation. You look in the mirror wearing your future smile, you speak, you laugh — and if you like, you take photos to hear what the people close to you think.
The trial gives both sides certainty: you commit to the result with full confidence, and we test how the design behaves with your lip movement and speech in real life. Every change you request on the mock-up is fed back into the design; permanent treatment only begins once you have said yes.
Which Treatments Are Combined?
Smile design is an umbrella plan; which treatments sit under it depends on the analysis. For reshaping and brightening the front teeth, laminate veneers — usually applied with only minimal preparation — are the first choice. Teeth with larger structural loss or previous root canal treatment are better served by zirconium crowns. Depending on the target shade, in-office whitening can be added to the plan.
The gums that frame the smile are part of the plan too: uneven levels or a gummy smile can be corrected with pink aesthetic procedures. For comprehensive, camera-ready transformations covering every visible tooth, the approach widely known as the Hollywood Smile is planned along the same principles. Where needed, orthodontic alignment such as clear aligner therapy can precede the design.
The Process at DizgeKlinik, Step by Step
Your first visit is a detailed examination where we take photographs, video and a digital scan. In the second step your design is prepared and tried in your mouth as a mock-up. Once the design is approved, the treatment visits begin: whitening, gum contouring, veneer or crown work proceed in a planned sequence.
Depending on scope, most cases are completed in three to five visits. At our clinic in Sultanbeyli, Istanbul, the analysis, the try-in and every treatment step happen under one roof with the same clinical team — you always know what is being done and why. We close with a review visit and set up your personal maintenance schedule.
Longevity and Aftercare
How long your new smile lasts depends on the materials in the plan and on daily care. Porcelain laminates and zirconium crowns hold their form and colour for many years with regular maintenance; long-term clinical follow-ups report high survival rates beyond the ten-year mark. The effect of whitening naturally fades with personal habits and can be refreshed in a short top-up session.
Aftercare is no different from caring for natural teeth: brushing twice a day, flossing and a check-up every six months. If you grind or clench your teeth, we recommend a night guard to protect the restorations. At each check-up we monitor both the restorations and your gum health, so your smile keeps looking the way it did on delivery day.

How many visits does smile design take?
It depends on scope, but most cases are completed in three to five visits including the analysis, the mock-up try-in and the treatment itself. If orthodontic pre-alignment or gum contouring joins the plan, the timeline is adjusted accordingly — we map out your exact schedule at the first consultation.
Can I really see the result in advance?
Yes — and not only on a screen. The design is first presented over your own photographs, then applied to your teeth as a temporary mock-up. You see it in the mirror, speak with it and smile with it. Nothing permanent happens until you approve the try-in.
Will my teeth need to be shaved down?
Not always. We prioritise minimally invasive options: whitening and gum contouring involve no tooth preparation at all, and laminate veneers usually need only a very thin preparation that stays within the enamel. If a tooth genuinely needs a crown, we identify it at the examination and explain exactly why.
Will the result look artificial?
Our goal is the opposite. Tooth shapes are chosen to match your facial features and age; the shade is balanced against your skin tone and the whites of your eyes. Micro-texture on the surface reflects light the way natural enamel does. How white and how 'perfect' the result should be is always your call — we decide it together.
Is a Hollywood Smile the same as smile design?
A Hollywood Smile is one of the most comprehensive forms of smile design: every tooth visible when you smile is redesigned with a distinctly bright, symmetrical aesthetic. Classic smile design can also aim for subtler, more natural goals and touch only as many teeth as necessary. Which suits you better depends on your expectations.
Can my gums be improved as well?
Yes. A gummy smile or uneven gum levels can be corrected comfortably in most cases with pink aesthetic procedures. The gum line is the frame of the whole design, which is why it is always evaluated together with the teeth at the analysis stage.
